Initially used to rehabilitate soldiers during World War I, Pilates gained prominence in the 1920s when Joseph and Clara Pilates opened their New York studio, attracting dancers and athletes. Joseph’s uncompromising standards, preserved by first-generation (GEN1) instructor Romana Kryzanowska, laid the foundation for authentic Pilates, as noted on PilatesWorldDirectory.com. PCO’s curriculum, rooted in Joseph’s vision, ensures this authenticity endures.

Romana Kryzanowska: Guardian of Authenticity

Romana Kryzanowska, a ballet dancer and Joseph Pilates’ protégé, became his chosen successor after his death in 1967. Trained directly by Joseph, Romana preserved the classical Pilates method, emphasizing precision and control. Her dedication, alongside GEN1 pioneers like Kathy Grant y Eve Gentry, ensured the method’s integrity, as highlighted on pilatesworlddirectory.com/top-pilates-schools/. Romana’s influence shapes PCO’s $1,899.99 complete certification program, which trains instructors in the full repertoire—Mat, Reformer, Cadillac, Chairs, and Barrels—maintaining her rigorous standards.

1992: PAPT Redefines Certification

By the early 1990s, Pilates lacked standardized certification. Dr. Melinda Bryan, a Doctor of Physical Therapy trained by Romana Kryzanowska, partnered with PAPT to launch the world’s first professional certification program at The Pilates Studio® de Los Ángeles in 1992. As noted on PilatesWorldDirectory.com, PAPT’s program, the oldest of its kind, integrated medical credibility through Dr. Bryan’s collaboration with orthopedic specialists, making Pilates a respected discipline in healthcare and fitness. Training thousands of instructors globally, Dr. Bryan’s GEN2 leadership revolutionized Pilates education, offering unmatched authenticity.

PCO: Global Access to Authentic Pilates

In 2010, PCO brought PAPT’s curriculum online, offering the $1,899.99 complete Pilates certification program in five languages—English, Spanish, French, Japanese, and Korean.
